Knorr Cream of Mushroom Soup
As an adult today, I still see the same brand of canned soup lining the shelves of groceries. This time, they have easy-open tabs so one never needs to fiddle with clunky can openers anymore. However, the high Peso-Dollar exchange rate coupled with inflation has made enjoying a bowl impractical, especially when one can buy an entire meal with its price.
With such a prohibitive cost, I resigned myself to never enjoying such childhood pleasures as an adult. Then I my wife stumbled upon a foil pack of Knorr Mushroom Soup. So we included one in that day’s purchase to taste if it would be a viable substitute.
While the one that comes in a can is complete, Knorr Mushroom Soup needs a liter, or five cups, of water before it is ready to be served. It is only after a few minutes of patiently stirring the mixture, that it becomes ready for consumption.
They say the proof of the pudding is in the eating and after tasting the result, the experience was a pleasant surprise. While the flavor isn’t as strong or the soup as thick from what I remember these may be corrected by simply lessening the amount of water used in the mixture.
[The few mushrooms can also be corrected by adding a small batch during preparation.]
Having said that, it appears that Knorr may have a viable substitute to imported versions in their hands. So much so, that a pack or two is now part of our regular grocery list.
There may be one slight thing to consider as Monosodium Glutamate, or MSG, is part of the ingredients listed in the pack. If this is not a deal breaker, then it might be worth checking it out on your next trip to the grocery. If not, then it may be preferable to stick to the imported canned varieties for now.
In my case, it is good enough to rekindle fond memories of my Mom preparing the soup, especially on lazy rainy days.
